The Ten Commandments
of
Physics Problem-Solving

 


1. Thou shalt draw a picture, and label it with known and unknown quantities.

2. Thou shalt ignore extraneous information.

3. Thou shalt show all thine work in an organized way, so that I might know what you are doing, and grant partial credit unto thee.

4. Thou shalt write neatly.

5. Thou shalt double-check thine algebra.

6. Thou shalt make certain thine equations are appropriate to the situation.

7. Thou shalt not plug in numbers too soon.

8. Thou shalt check thine units, and write them.

9. After thou hast calculated an answer, thou shalt ask thyself, ‘Does this make sense?’

10. Thou shalt not give an answer with more significant digits than are warranted, nor fewer.
